What is Hepatobiliary Pancreatic (HPB) Surgery?

HPB surgery revolves around treatment of the diseases of the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, bile duct. Different kinds of problems, both cancerous and non-cancerous, are treated including liver cancer and cysts. We are committed to provide the most advanced diagnostic & therapeutic tools available in the treatment of liver, biliary and pancreatic tumors. Any lesion presenting in liver, bile duct, gall bladder or pancreas is evaluated in detail with help of advanced radiological investigations with latest CT scan, MRI, PET CT, nuclear medicine tests in addition to clinical assessment. Benign leisions are tackled with surgical resection of the diseased organ, if required. The cancerous lesions are best tackled with surgery, if possible. All the cancerous lesions are assessed by a multidisciplinary board comprisisng of liver surgeon, gastroenterologist, oncologist, interventional radiologist, radiotherapist and anesthesiologist. The cumulative decision is taken to provide best care to the patient and helps us to individualise the patient’s care.

Liver surgery means removal of the part(s) of the liver with the tumors. When surgeon removes a tumor, they’ll also need to take out a small amount of healthy tissue around it. The amount of tissue that will be removed depends on the size and location of the tumor(s). Healthy liver has immense potential to grow and regenerate. Healthy liver left behind in you would grow in size. Liver tumors generally does not show major symptoms in early satges, often are detected when are large in size and sometimes advanced to offer any curative therapy. Liver surgery needs special training and special instruments to treat such cases successfully. For a successful liver surgery, a detailed assessment, good radiology planning, assessment of patient fitness, liver quality assessment is required, which is done with advanced technology.

Gall bladder and Biliary surgery is done for various kind of benign and cancerous diseases involving gall bladder and bile duct. The surgical procedures remain mainstay for curative therapy for such diseses. The surgical procedures for such lesions vary from a simple procedure like cholecystectomy to resction of bile duct and joing small intestine to the bile ducts and may for vascular resection and anastomosis. Benign biliary strictures, CBD stones can be tackled by non-surgical endoscopic procedures. However, most of the symptomatic gallbladder diseases need surgical removal of the gall bladder. Resectable (remaoval by surgical procedure) Bile duct cancer and gall bladder cancer needs surgical procedure, which include removal of the diseased organ and reconstruction of the removed part by small intestine. In cases where surgery is entirely not possible, treatment is focused toward reducing the growth and shrinking the cancer.
